The UN should recognise ‘Hinduphobia’ and violence against Buddhists, Sikhs too, stated Mr. Tirumurti. U.N.’s latest Global Counter-Terrorism strategy is selective and full of flaws, the Indian envoy added. He urged the UN to exclude terms like “violent nationalism” and “right-wing extremism” to resolutions on terrorism, as they would “dilute” the meaning. Mr. Tirumurti reminded that India will oppose any expansion of the terms included the UNSC’s discussions on terrorism.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has signalled to restart nuclear weapons testing amid threats by the United States. As per Korean Central News Agency, the officials set policy goals for strengthening military capabilities to counter the Americans’ “hostile moves”, in a Politburo meeting. The North test fired short-range ballistic missiles on January 14 & 16 in retaliation against the freshly imposed sanctions by the Biden Administration.

Continuing the rise in COVID-19 cases, Kerala Health Department confirmed the highest single day spike, over 46,387 fresh cases on January 20. Besides, the state reported 15,388 recoveries and 32 fatalities in the past 24 hours. With the new cases, Kerala currently has 1,99,091 active cases and 55,501 deceased. Meanwhile, a total of 1,337 people were hospitalized for COVID-19 treatment.
Maharashtra schools for pre-primary to class XII students are set to reopen from January 24. However, the schools will function only in regions with low number of COVID-19 cases. Notably, Maharashtra CM took the decision, considering the proposal of School Education Department official. Furthermore, all the schools which will reopen, need to follow strict SOPs, and ensure the staff are vaccinated.
