Assam Govt Proposes Bill To Shut Down State-Run Madrassas
Despite objections from the opposition, Assam's minister Himanta Biswa Sarma proposed a bill on December 28 to shut-down all state-run madrassas. The bill stated that the madrassas would be converted to upper primary, high, and higher secondary schools. However, the professional roles and conditions of teaching and non-teaching staff would remain the same. Sarma said that they are "happy" to bring the "secular" move.
