Australia Asks Facebook, Google To Pay For Local News; Law Passed
The Australian government on February 25, by passing a law, mandated tech giants like Google and Facebook to pay for local news content. The law named 'News Media and Digital Platforms Mandatory Bargaining Code' aims to "sustain public interest journalism in Australia". Earlier, several regulators had argued that the tech companies were leveraging their market position and using the content of local news publishers without paying any remuneration.
