Editors Guild Of India Condemns UP Government For Restricting Journalists
The Editors Guild of India on October 4 issued a statement that condemned the actions of Uttar Pradesh government for preventing journalists from reporting the Hathras case. It also strongly rebuked the authorities for tapping the phones of journalists and leaking them, which can threaten their lives. Furthermore, it mentioned that the restrictions stopped media persons from doing their jobs, and urged the government to help journalists cover the incident safely. The statement further expressed that "attacks against media are becoming part of a growing trend seen in the recent months". While saying that journalists have been harassed and continuously threatened by the various state governments across the country, the guild demanded "corrective actions" in this regard.
