EU Drug Control Agency Suggests Authorizing Use Of Smallpox Vaccine To Treat Monkeypox
The use of a smallpox vaccination to treat monkeypox was suggested for authorization on July 22 by the European Union's (EU) drug authority. Imvanex, a smallpox vaccine created by the Danish pharmaceutical company Bavarian Nordic, has been authorized in the EU since 2013 for the purpose of preventing smallpox. Due to smallpox and monkeypox viruses' similarities, it was also thought to be a viable vaccination for monkeypox.
