Guv Declares Assam 'Disturbed Area' For 6 Months Ahead Of State Polls
Under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA), the Governor of Assam on February 24 declared the state as a 'Disturbed area' for another 6 months. Reportedly, the order earlier imposed on August 28, 2020, was extended without mentioning a specific reason by Governor Jagdish Mukhi. However, the government officials cited increase in attacks and seizure of arms as the reason behind the move. Assam Assembly elections are slated for April-May 2021.
