Nobel Prize in Physics, 2020: Three Researchers Awarded for Two Discoveries
The coveted Nobel Prize in Physics for the year 2020 has been awarded to three scientists for two different discoveries. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded Roger Penrose for discovering “that black hole formation is a robust prediction of the general theory of relativity” and Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez “for the discovery of a supermassive compact object at the centre of our galaxy”. Penrose, who works as a professor at the Oxford University, has described black holes in detail and proved their existence. His work is considered as the most important contribution to the general theory of relativity. US-based scientists Genzel and Ghez, with limited technology provided the evidence of supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way. Reportedly, the award will be divided into two, with one given to Penrose and the other half shared by Genzel and Ghez.
