Taliban Story: Rise To Power & Fall Of Afghanistan
What started as a small insurgent group in the late 90s is now one of the biggest terrorist organizations in the world with 300,000 militants. According to a BBC report, the Taliban once controlled almost 90% of Afghanistan between 1995 to 2001, they were forced out during the US-led invasion for providing safe haven to the infamous Osama Bin Laden.
In the last 20 years, the US has spent billions of dollars and lost countless troops in its fight against insurgency in Afghanistan, the NATO data shows. President Joe Biden announced that the US will withdraw all of its forces from Afganistan and as the decision was taken, the Taliban once again began to regroup taking over the important cities of Afghanistan.
The Taliban on August 15, 2021, captured Kabul and wished to form an "inclusive, Islamic government." President Ashraf Ghani resigned and fled from Afghanistan leaving its people in disarray.
