
Tanzania's Largest Gemstones Found: Makes Miner a Millionare
A 52-year-old Tanzanian miner, Saniniu Laizer was rewarded 7.74 billion Tanzanian shillings ($3.35 million) from the Tanzanian government. The dark violet-blue gemstones, which had a combined weight of 15kg (2.3 lbs), were discovered by the miner in one of the tanzanite mines situated at Manyara. Tanzanite is one of the rarest gemstones on earth to make ornaments, and is only found in this region.
