In an attempt to increase adoption and manufacturing of electric vehicles in India, the government has increased subsidies on electric two-wheelers under the FAME II scheme. According to a notification issued by the Department of Heavy Industry, the amendment has increased the incentive from ₹10,000 per kWh to ₹15,000 per kWh. The notification further states that the incentive will be 40% of the total two-wheeler cost.

Uber on June 9 announced to hire around 250 engineers in Hyderabad and Bengaluru to expand the tech and product teams. Two-wheeler manufacturer Royal Enfield has announced a financial assistance of Rs 2 crore to the Tamil Nadu Disaster Relief Fund to fight against COVID-19 pandemic. Meeting Chief Minister MK Stalin, Royal Enfield CEO Vinod Dasari presented a cheque of Rs 2 crore and stated, "Tamil Nadu is the home of Royal Enfield motorcycles." Notably, the two-wheeler company has three manufacturing units in Chennai.
Ending an year-long wait, Italian carmaker Lamborghini on June 8 launched the Huracan Evo Rear-Wheel-Drive (RWD) Spyder in India. The company has set the open-top model's price at Rs 3.54 crore, slightly higher than RWD Coupe (Rs 3.22 cr). With 320kmph top speed, the vehicle can reach 100kmph in just 3.5 seconds. Besides, it has a 8.4-inch touchscreen with voice recognition and its roof can be opened/closed in 17 seconds.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk on June 7 confirmed that the company has halted the production of its upcoming Model S Plaid+ as the previous Plaid model is good enough. "Plaid+ is canceled. No need, as Plaid is just so good," tweeted Musk. The halted model would have been Tesla's longest range vehicle with 836 km in single charge. However, Tesla will start deliveries of Plaid model from June 10.
Swedish luxury carmaker Volvo Cars has registered a 43% year-on-year growth in its global sales in May 2021. The company has sold 64,111 cars worldwide in May 2021. The majority of the sales were recorded in the United States and Europe with a strong demand for the models like XC90 and XC60. Meanwhile, in China, Volvo has continued its 14-month sales growth streak by selling 16,895 units.
Japanese automaker Toyota has unveiled a special 70th anniversary edition of the Land Cruiser Prado. Available in five colours, the limited edition will offer two different seating options - five or seven seats - with a 2.8-litre diesel and 2.7-litre petrol engine. Additionally, the mechanically unchanged, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 70th Anniversary Edition, will also sport floor mats featuring the special edition logo.
German carmaker Mercedes on June 2 announced to launch its luxury SUV GLS Maybach in India next week. First showcased globally in November 2019, the vehicle will enter Indian market in dual colour scheme. The SUV has also been equipped with two display screens of 12.3-inch along with panoramic sunroof, climatised massage seats, foldable table and refrigerator. Besides, it will sport a new variant of the V8 petrol engine.
Two-wheeler manufacturer Hero MotoCorp has suffered a 50.83% decline in its month-on-month sales in May 2021 due to COVID-19. The company has reportedly sold 1,83,044 vehicles in May 2021 as compared to the sales of 3,72,285 units in April. The company said that the sales have declined primarily due to regional lockdowns, causing temporary closure of manufacturing plants in different regions.
Luxury carmaker BMW is likely to launch its limited BMW X7 Dark Shadow edition soon in India. With only 500 units for the worldwide sale, this upgraded version of the flagship model, launched in 2020, is likely to be priced above Rs 1 crore (ex-showroom). Besides featuring a BMW sports exhaust system, the SUV is also equipped with a panoramic sunroof, massage functionality and a head-up display system.
