All Women Married, Unmarried Entitled To Safe & Legal Abortion: SC

In a landmark judgement, the Supreme Court of India held that all women, married and unmarried, are entitled to safe and legal abortion. A bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud said that the meaning of rape under Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act must also include marital rape. The bench further stated that differentiating between married and u married women under the MTP Act, is “artificial and constitutionally unsustainable”.

Kerala HC Permits Pregnancy Abortion At 28 Weeks For Minor Rape Victim

Kerala High Court granted medical termination of a juvenile rape victim's 28-week pregnancy. The "anguish caused by continuation of the pregnancy can be presumed to cause a grave injury to the mental health of the 14-year-old girl," said a medical board. HC also stated if the fetus survived the surgery, the hospital must provide the infant with the finest medical care possible so that it grows into a healthy kid.

Indiana Lawmakers Impose Abortion Ban With Limited Exceptions

Indiana lawmakers enacted a near-total ban on abortion, with limited exceptions on August 5, becoming the first state in the US to do so since Supreme Court reversed the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling. The Indiana statute was enacted with a few exceptions, such as rape and incest, and to safeguard the mother's life and physical condition. The treatment is now permitted till 22 weeks of pregnancy.

Unmarried Woman Can't Be Denied Abortion, Says Supreme Court

In a hearing, the Supreme Court said, a woman can't be denied an abortion because of her marital status. The matter came into the Apex Court, after the Delhi HC refused abortion permission to a 25-year-old woman, saying it amounts to killing a foetus. The Top Court reviewed the petition and rule out HC orders, and directed Delhi AIIMS to conduct medical tests, conducting abortion, if no life-risks.

Kerala HC Grants Permission To Abort 24 Weeks Pregnancy Of Minor Rape Victim

In a landmark judgement, Kerala HC has granted permission for the medical termination of 24 weeks pregnancy of a 15-year-old rape victim. The court stated that if the baby is born alive, "the hospital shall ensure best medical treatment". The court also stated that if the victim is not willing to assume responsibility for the baby, the government shall provide the baby with medical and other facilities.

Delhi HC Rejects Abortion Plea Of 23-Week Pregnant Unmarried Woman

An unmarried woman who seeked permission to abort her 23-week pregnancy, has been denied permission by the Delhi HC. Notably, the woman is 25-years-old and has conceived the baby in a consensual sexual relationship. Her plea has been rejected invoking Rule 3B of Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Rule 2003, which doesn't allow pregnancies above 20 weeks in a consensual sexual relationship to be aborted.

Foetus Sex Detection Racket Busted In Odisha's Berhampur, 13 Arrested

In Odisha's Berhampur, 13 persons have been arrested for allegedly running a foetus sex detection racket. The main accused in the case has been identified as an ASHA worker. Reportedly, they would identify the gender of the foetus in a pregnant woman, and arrange for an abortion, if it is a female. Furthermore, one Ultrasound machine along with its equipments, a register and a mobile phone have been seized.

Abortion Rights Activists Protest In Favor Of Constitutional Right To Abortion: New York

Hundreds of abortion rights advocates marched and rallied in New York on May 14 in favor of the constitutional right to abortion, and voiced their concern about what this may imply for women's reproductive choices. The Supreme Court seems to be leaning toward giving the states final say. If this happens, nearly half of the states, especially in the South and Midwest, are likely to instantly ban abortion.
