Make Rules For Species Not Covered Under WPA, 1972: Delhi HC
The Delhi High Court has asked the central government to frame rules for exotic species that are not protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. Filed by animal rights group 'PETA', the plea sought a status for a rescued hippopotamus. Moreover, the court directed the authorities to permanently keep the hippo in a Jamnagar facility. Reportedly, the hippo was found in poor health from an Asiad circus.

Delhi Zoo Reopens After An Year, Witness 1,600 Visitors On Day 1
Delhi’s National Zoological Park on April 1 witnessed over 1600 visitors as it reopened after being shut for almost a year due to the pandemic. Zoo director Ramesh Pandey informed that 483 tickets worth Rs 1.18 lakh were sold as the visitors came in two shifts. Ensuring social distancing and opening more entry points, the officials are also assessing captive animals' reactions on seeing people after over a year.

Gujarat CM Rupani Weighed Against Silver, Donates To Cow Shelters
In a 'Rajat Tula' event organised by Samast Mahajan Trust on March 29, Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani was weighed against 85 kilograms of silver. After the event, the CM donated the silver to cow shelters in the state for the welfare of livestock. Mentioning Karuna Abhiyan that aims at treating birds injured by the kite strings, CM Rupani said his government has also inducted 350 veterinary vans into the service.

First Himalayan Serow Spotted; Forest Officials Start Tracking
Few residents of Manali’s Hurling village for the first time have spotted the Himalayan Serow - a threatened species - in Great Himalayan National Park, Kullu and Chamba region. Forest conservator Anil Thakur believed that it might have wandered from its habitat Rupi Bhawa Wildlife Sanctuary. After spotting the animal, the forest department has called its officials led by DFO Hardev Negi to keep a track of the threatened animal.

US: Emotional Support Animals Can No Longer Access Free Flights
The US Department of Transport (DOT) has discontinued the facility of emotional support animals as service animals in the airlines. The department took the decision after passengers started "fraudulently representing their pets as service animals" to avoid transport charges. India's Celebrity-like Chimpanzee Suzi Dies Of Heart Attack
India's most popular and the only chimpanzee in the Hyderabad zoo, Suzi, succumbed to a heart-stroke on November 12. The 34-year-old was one among the few chimps left in Indian zoos and was widely popular among the zookeepers and visitors. An autopsy report revealed that the chimp's lungs and heart had failed, which lead to a stroke. Interestingly, Suzi was once a pet of the Sahara group's owner Subrata Roy.

Kerala Set To Have World's Largest Rehabilitation Centre For Elephants
The Kerala government has planned to expand and renovate Elephant Rehabilitation Centre at Thiruvananthapuram's Kottur to attract tourists. The project would be undertaken with a funding of Rs 108 crore from Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board. Japan: Rescuers Set Free 164 Ailing Dogs Crammed Into A Tiny Apartment
164 parasite-infested dogs crammed in a 30 square-metre house under shelves and under chair-tables were rescued by health officials in Izumo, Japan. The Public Health Officials had raided the house sever years ago as well when the neighbors complained of 'bad smell'. However, the owners had not cooperated at the time. Activist Kunihisa Sagami and his group are now on the move to provide foster homes and medical help to the dogs.
