SC Dismissed BJP Leader's PIL Seeking Anti-Conversion Law; Says Individuals Aged 18 or Above Are Free To Choose Their Religion

Justice R Fali Nariman-led Supreme Court bench has dismissed an anti-religious conversion plea stating that individuals aged 18 or above are free to choose their religion. The plea filed by BJP's Ashwini Upadhyay sought a central law granting imprisonment of 3-10 years with a hefty fine for those involved in religious conversions. Terminating the PIL, Justice Nariman warned the petitioner of fines, if found pressing the matter.

Gujarat Eyes 'Love Jihad' Law, Bids 5 Year Jail For Religious Conversions

The Gujarat government is all set to amend the Gujarat Freedom of Religion Act, 2003 to impose stricter consequences against forced religious conversions through marriage. Muzaffarnagar Police Exonerates Brothers Charged Against Love Jihad

Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar police have withdrawn charges against two brothers - Nadeem and Salman - who were previously charged under contentious 'Love Jihad' law. The brothers were accused of unlawfully forcing a woman to change her religion, following which an FIR was filed against them in Mansurpur police station. Supreme Court To Hear Petitions Questioning Love Jihad Laws

The Supreme Court agreed to hear pleas questioning the constitutional validity of the 'Love Jihad' laws on January 6. The apex court stated that it would hear pleas and arrive at a resolution rather than staying the implementation of the laws at present. Reportedly, the plea was filed by advocate Vishal Thakre, an NGO Citizen for Justice and Peace, and others. Earlier, the laws were passed in three states including Uttar Pradesh.

Madhya Pradesh Passes Love Jihad Bill 2020; Rs 50,000 penalty For Violators

Madhya Pradesh becomes the third state among the Indian states to pass the 'Freedom Of Religion Bill 2020' in-order to prevent the forceful religious conversions. "The forceful conversion will attract 1-5 yrs of imprisonment and a minimum Rs 25,000 fine," said MP Home Minister Narottam Mishra. Also, incase of a minor or woman or someone from Scheduled Tribe will lead to 2-10 years imprisonment and minimum penalty of up to Rs 50,000.

UP Police Arrests Muslim Teen Under Anti-Conversion Law

Uttar Pradesh's Bijnor police have arrested a teenage Muslim boy and charged him against the controversial "love jihad" law. Arrested on December 15, the police accused the boy of attempting to convert a 16-year-old Hindu girl. While the girl's father has made a complaint, the girl and her mother have denied the conversion charges. Meanwhile, the police have stated that the girl was kidnapped by the boy and escaped somehow.
