Petition Submitted To SC Requesting Confidential Survey Of Mosques

A plea has been submitted to Supreme Court, requesting the Archaeological Survey of India conduct a discreet survey of all historic and notable mosques in India that are hundred years old. PIL requested that "wuzu" or "wudu" (Islamic ritual for cleaning areas of body prior to prayer) be removed from mosque ponds and wells. Discreet survey was asked in order to avoid unnecessary community antagonism if a relic is discovered.

Varanasi Court Orders ASI To Survey Gyanvapi Mosque Over Temple Claims

The Archaeological Survey of India has got a nod from a Varanasi court to carry out a physical survey of Gyanvapi mosque, next to Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Hearing a three-decade old petition, the court ordered the ASI to constitute a five-member committee. The petition claimed that the mosque was built over an ancient temple demolished by Aurangzeb. However, the court has not stopped people from offering prayer at the mosque.
