In a shocking incident, Samajwadi party leader and former chairman of Nagar Panchayat Tulsipur, Firoz Pappu was killed by unknown assailants in Uttar Pradesh's Balrampur, on January 3. Police said that the 41-year-old leader was attacked with a sharp-edged weapon while he was returning home from Jarwa. Reportedly, security has been increased in the region after Pappu's supporters started protests demanding the arrest of the murderers.

In the Balrampur district of Chattisgarh, teachers were seen carrying mid-day meal ration on their shoulders. Reportedly, the teachers traveled 8km, while crossing mountains and streams. The Uttar Pradesh Police have arrested two people for allegedly gang-raping a 22-year old girl in Balrampur’s Gaisari village. The Police have identified the accused as Sahil and Sahid. Reportedly, the woman was a second-year B.Com student and was attacked by the men while returning home from college, on September 29.The family said that she returned home with her legs and spine broken and passed away on the way to hospital.
