Central Govt Likely To Shut Down MTNL Amid Losses

The Central government is planning to shut down the telecom operator Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL). According to the report, a inside source stated that the intention is to transfer MTNL's workforce and operations to Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL). This is a drastic shift from the previous plan of the government to merge the two entities.The recent decision was due to debt and persistent losses faced by MTNL.

Union Cabinet Approves Rs 1.64 Lakh To BSNL's Revival

Union Cabinet has approved Rs 1.64 lakh crore package for a state-owned telecom company, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) revival, confirmed Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Meghalaya's 1,164 Remote Villages To Soon Have Mobile Networks: Govt

In Meghalaya, the government aims to set up over 350 mobile towers, which will provide a mobile network to all villages of the state.  As per officials on April 10, the Meghalaya CS reviewed the implementation of the USOF scheme ensuring mobile internet services to 1,164 remote villages (of 6,839) without internet/mobile networks. The government is investing Rs 726.65 crore for the project in collaboration with BSNL mobile towers

Centre Says BSNL To Complete Its 4G Roll-out In Next 18-24 Months

The Centre on March 17 stated that Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will be completing the roll out of its 4G services in next 18-24 months. It also informed in the Lok Sabha that the privatisation of state-owned BSNL is not in the government's plan. BSNL To Give Free Sim Cards As Promotional Offer

State-owned telecom operator BSNL has announced to provide free sim cards to customers who wish to join the network. According to reports, the offer will be available only from November 14 till November 28. However, the promotional offer will be applicable under terms and conditions. As per the condition, the customer should make a First Recharge of minimum Rs 100. The offer can be availed at any BSNL retail outlets.

BSNL Might Face Manpower Deficit; Lays Off 20,000 Contract Employees

According to a statement by the BSNL Employees' Union, the units have been directed to reduce costs on contracts and this could lead to the eviction of over 20,000 employees. The Union stated that 30,000 contract employees had already been removed. Earlier, through the VRS-2019 plan, 79,000 employees had retired and the union claims that the removal of the contract employees could worsen the situation and lead to a manpower deficit.
