Centre Asks Chief Justice UU Lalit To Name Successor Before Retirement

The central government has asked Chief Justice of India (CJI) Uday Umesh Lalit to name his successor before retirement on November 8. Notably, Lalit was sworn in as the CJI on August 27, by President Droupadi Murmu. With the practice of CJI naming the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court as the next CJI, Justice DY Chandrachud is expected to become the 50th CJI.

Supreme Court Hears Freebies Of Political Parties Matter, Refers To Larger Bench

The Supreme Court reviewed a plea demanding a ban on the announcement of freebies by political parties, on August 26. During the hearing, the court referred the matter to a larger bench of three judges for judgement.  The Apex Court said, "Looking into the complexities of the issues involved and the prayer to overrule the judgement rendered by a two-judge bench, to three-bench judge".

We Have 'Only 20 Judges Per 10 Lakh Population Which Is Alarmingly Low': CJI Ramana

At the inauguration of the 11th joint conference of the Chief Ministers and Chief Justices of High Courts, CJI NV Ramana said that thee legislature should pass bill with "clarity of thought, foresight, people's welfare in mind. By doing so, we could ensure that the "scope of litigation gets minimised". He then stated that there are "only 20 judges per 10 lakh population, which is alarmingly low".

CJI NV Ramana Calls For 50% Reservation For Women In Judiciary

NV Ramana, Chief Justice of India on September 26, called for a 50% reservation for women in the judiciary and wished to have the same in law colleges. "We need 50% reservation for women in judiciary. It is an issue of thousands of years of oppression," he said. Records show that less than 30% of women constitute the lower judiciary while it is 11% for higher levels.

'We Will Pass Order On Pegasus Next Week', Says CJI NV Ramana

Following the Pegasus snooping row case, an inquiry committee will be set up by the Supreme Court, said CJI NV Ramana on September 23. "We wanted to pass an order on the matter before this week. We will try to pass an order on Pegasus next week" he said. The Wire purported that leaders, journalists and industrialists were on the target list.

SC Collegium Sends 68 Names To Centre To Fill Vacancies In HCs

Three-member Collegium led by the Chief Justice NV Ramana has recommended 68 names, including 10 women, to the Centre to fill the vaccines in Indian High Courts. As of September 1, there were vacancies of 281 permanent judges and 184 for Additional judges in 25 Indian High Courts. The Allahabad High Court has 68 vacancies, followed by 40 each in Punjab & Haryana and 36 in Calcutta.

India Likely To Appoint Justice BV Nagarathna As First Woman CJI

The SC collegium led by the CJI NV Ramana recommended nine names for appointing judges in the apex court, on August 17. Justice BV Nagarathna serving in the Karnataka High Court will likely become the first woman Chief Justice of India ''for a little over a month'' in 2027 following the government's approval. The rule says three out of nine appointees can become the CJI before their tenure ends.

SC Suggests AP, Telangana To Solve Krishna Water Dispute Through 'Mediation'

The Supreme Court on August 2 advised the states of Telangana and Andra Pradesh to solve the '1969 Krishna Water Dispute' with “mediation” and share the river water for drinking and irrigation as it belonged to both states. Besides, it is said that Telangana has been deprived of its share of drinking and irrigation water. “If the matter can be settled in mediation, please do that," Chief Justice of India NV Ramana said.

Journalists Seek Probe Against Pegasus Scandal; SC To Hear Plea

The Supreme Court said that it will hear the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by senior journalists N Ram and Sashi Kumar to probe the Israeli Spyware Pegasus scandal. The petition was followed by reports that said that the spyware was used to snoop on several politicians, journalists, and activists. The issue was tabled by Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal on July 30 to Chief Justice N V Ramana.
