Haryana Civil Polls Underway, 12.60 Lakh Voters Eligible

Haryana Municipal committees and municipal council elections for 28 and 18 seats respectively are underway on June 19. Scheduled between 7am-6pm, the polling will be held in 1,290 (municipal councils) and 671 stations (municipalities). In addition, 12.60 lakh voters are eligible in municipal councils, and 5.70 lakh in the municipality. Furthermore, over 14,000 polling staff and police were deployed for election security. TMC Sweeps Urban Bengal, BJP Says It Doesn't Accept The Result: WB Civic Poll

In the West Bengal civic polls, the ruling party Trinamool Congress on March 2 registered a landslide victory across the state. State BJP president Sukanta Majumdar has blamed the TMC for false voting and is not ready to accept the result. "The result does not reflect the people's feelings. The election was a farce, we do not accept the results," Majumdar said. However, TMC won 102 out of 107 municipalities.

Civic Polls For 108 Municipalities Underway In West Bengal

West Bengal started civic polls for 108 municipalities from February 27, starting from 7 AM. The voting will go till 5 PM, said the West Bengal State Election Commission. More than 95 lakh voters are set to choose their representatives spreading to 2,276 wards. Polling is being held under police officers tight security. Calcutta HC Directs EC To Postpone Civic Polls By 4-6 Weeks: COVID-19

In view of the COVID-19 surge, the Calcutta HC, on January 14, directed the Election Commission to postpone civic polls by 4-6 weeks. Hearing a petition, the HC asked the EC to delay the Siliguri, Chandernagore, Bidhannagar and Asansol municipal Corporations elections, scheduled to be held on January 22. The decision came at a time when, West Bengal reported over 20,000 COVID-19 cases with over 60% positivity rate.

BJP Defeats TMC, CPI(M) To Win Tripura Civic Poll

In the civic body elections in Tripura, the ruling BJP won all the seats of the 51-member Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) on November 28. BJP also performed well in several other urban local bodies, reported PTI. The election was held on the 222 seats of AMC on November 25 and while on 112 seats BJP nominees won uncontested. However, opposition parties TMC and CPI(M) demanded a fresh election.
