Meghalaya Politician Convicted In Rape Case, Pronounced 25 Years Imprisonment
In a drawback to the former MLA Julius Dorphang, the Meghalaya High Court dismissed his petition seeking to overturn the decision of lower court. Notably, Dorphang was sentenced to 25 years in prison for raping a young girl. The High Court panel hearing the case presided over by Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee, also ordered the state government to pay the victim a compensation of Rs 20 lakh within three-months.

CJI UU Lalit Names DY Chandrachud As His Successor
Chief Justice of India (CJI) Uday Umesh Lalit named Justice DY Chandrachud to be his successor. With this, the tenure of CJI UU Lalit will end on November 8, following which the new CJI will take over charges. If approved by the Union Government, DY Chandrachud will be the 50th CJI and will take the official oath on November 9. Justice Chandrachud will have a tenure of over two years.

Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Gujarat High Court judge Justice Jamshed Burjor Pardiwala have been appointed as judges of Supreme Court, by central government. SC To Decide If Larger Bench Should Take Up Pleas Against Sedition Law
The Supreme would soon decide if a larger bench needs to hear the challenges against Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code. A bench comprising CJI NV Ramana, Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Surya Kant has posted the matter on 10th May. The bench stated that the matter would not be adjourned. The Attorney General of India asserted that there is a need to check the misuse of the law.

CJI Ramana Talks About Reopening Courts After Dussehra
Newly elected Chief Justice of India NV Ramana is envisaging to reopen the court after Dussehra vacation if there is "zero threat" of COVID-19.While attending felicitation ceremony, Justice Ramana said, "We are ready to reopen courts even in the pandemic time. Parliamentary Debates, Lawmaking In Sorry State Of Affairs: CJI Ramana
CJI NV Ramana deplored the degrading standards of parliamentary debates and laws made by the legislature at the independence day ceremony organized by the SCBA. "Now we see legislation with the sorry state of affairs. There are a lot of gaps and a lot of ambiguity in making laws" he stated. He added that this creates a loss to the government and inconvenience to the public, increasing litigation.

Kerala Girl Praises CJI For His Intervention Against COVID-19
Lidwina Joseph, a 10-year-old girl from Thrissur, Kerala, has sent a handwritten letter to the CJI N.V. Ramana, praising the Supreme Court’s effective actions against the pandemic. Reportedly, the handwritten letter holds an illustration showing bespectacled judge using his gavel to give the Coronavirus a knock on its head. Praising the letter as “beautiful,” the impressed CJI Ramana has sent her a signed copy of the Constitution.
