SC Issues Notice To Gujarat Govt, Hears Bilkis Bano Gang Rape PILs

The Supreme Court reviewed three Public Interest Litigations (PIL) filed against the release of 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano gang-rape case. On August 25, the SC issued a notice to the BJP-led Gujarat Government for the release of the convicts, demanding a reply and adjourned the matter after two weeks. The case was heard by a bench headed by CJI NV Ramana, who is to retire on August 26.

SC Bench Reviews Political Freebies Row, Asks What Is Freebies?

The Supreme Court bench led by CJI NV Ramana reviewed the freebies row and said, it cannot prevent political parties from making promises during the election campaigns. On August 17, Ramana said, "The question is what constitutes right promises and what is the right way of spending public money." The bench observed that it is essential to define what is a freebie and what doesn't."

SC Asks Commission To Look Into Freebies Promised By Political Parties

Supreme Court directed the concerned authority to resolve the issue of freebies announced by political parties in India. On July 26, the Apex Court bench led by CJI NV Ramana said, " Maybe we can invite the Commission to look into this aspect. The Centre cannot be expected to issue directions". The development was came in view of a plea filed, demanding to seize freebies by political parties, during elections.

SC Dismisses Plea Of Stay On 2nd Postmortem On TN Suicide Victim's Body

The Supreme Court dismissed a plea by the father of a student who died by suicide in Kallakurichi, Tamil Nadu. Victim's father filed a petition,  seeking to stay the second postmortem on the body, scheduled on July 19 as per the Madras HC's direction. CJI NV Ramana said,  "Sorry, the high court is already seized of the matter." Meanwhile, the Madras HC constituted a set of doctor's panels for postmortem.

Former SC, HC Judges Write To CJI Ramana Against Protestor's House Demolition In UP

The former Supreme Court and High Court judges wrote to the Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, asking for a suo-motu cognizance of the detention of protestors and demolition of their houses by the UP Government. Notably, after the recent protest against prophet remarks, the UP Civic Body demolished houses of many protestors, calling illegal encroachment. However, the judges condemned and demanded action and arrest of concerned officials.

We Have 'Only 20 Judges Per 10 Lakh Population Which Is Alarmingly Low': CJI Ramana

At the inauguration of the 11th joint conference of the Chief Ministers and Chief Justices of High Courts, CJI NV Ramana said that thee legislature should pass bill with "clarity of thought, foresight, people's welfare in mind. By doing so, we could ensure that the "scope of litigation gets minimised". He then stated that there are "only 20 judges per 10 lakh population, which is alarmingly low".
