Coal Scam Case

Trinamool Congress party's national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and his wife Rujira Banerjee have been issued fresh summons by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection to a money laundering case linked to an alleged coal scam. In addition, The move was taken after the high court rejected the plea of Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee’s nephew. Notably, ED had asserted that Banerjee had obtained funds from illegal trade.

During CBI's raid at a coalfield from West Bengal's Asansol, a coalfield's security official has died after suffering from a heart attack. The deceased has been identified as Dhananjay Rai, who was an area security inspector at the Eastern Coalfields Limited. For the Jharkhand coal block scam in 1999, former Union Minister Dilip Ray has been given 3-year jail term by a special CBI court. Besides, two government officials have also been sentenced the same. Reportedly, an FIR was registered against Ray in September 2012 by CBI on the grounds of irregularities in 'coal block allocations'. He has served as Minister of State in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee regime.
