China Govt Plans Intervention To Ease Power Crunch

China's thermal coal future sank about 13 %, extending the losses. The government plans to intervene and reduce the surging prices of the commodity to help the electricity producers in the widespread power crunch. Moreover, the country's security regulator has asked future exchanges to raise fees, restrict trading quotas, and crack down on speculation in response to high coal prices.

Coal Imports In India Drops By 2.7% In August; 15.22 MT In 2021

India experienced a decline in its coal imports to 15.22 million tonnes (MT) from 15.64 MT, which is 2.7% less in August 2021. Besides, the total coal imports this year, non-coking coal was 9.08 MT against 10.33 MT last year. Approximately 6.71% of coal imports have decreased through major and non-major ports. Moreover, the crisis was caused due to the closure of some mines and monsoons, says Coal Minister.

Centre Asks Power Plants To Import 10% Coal To Boost Supply

The central government has asked the power plants to add 10% of the imported coal to boost the supply, amid the ongoing coal crisis. It also warned the states that federal companies will curb their power supplies if they are found selling electricity on power exchanges to cash in on surging prices. Over half of India’s 135 coal-fired power plants have fuel stocks that will last three days or less.

Indian Railways To Deliver Coal To Power Plants: Coal Crisis

Indian Railways is preparing to deliver coal continuously to power plants, despite a purported scarcity of coal at thermal power plants. The shortfall is being treated as an "emergency" by the national transporter. Railways informed the Power and Coal Ministries in a meeting that carrying capacity was not an issue for the national transporter and that it was ready to deliver as much coal to power plants as needed.

Coal Shortage In India Will Normalise In 3-4 Days, Says Govt

Amid the ongoing shortage of coal in several Indian states, Union Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi said the crisis will start normalising in the next three-four days on October 9. Reportedly, a sudden demand for ''electricity due to revival of economy and heavy rain in coal mine areas during September'' led to a crisis. Besides, China, the largest coal consumer followed by India is also facing a shortage.

India's Energy Crisis Worsens; Coal Reserves 'Running Low'

India Gets First Plant To Convert High Ash Coal To Methanol

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) established India's first pilot plant to convert high ash coal to methanol in Hyderabad, said the Ministry of Science and Technology on September 17. The plant can generate 0.25 metric tons per day. Reportedly, coal is converted into 99% pure methanol and can be used as a transportation fuel. ''This technology will help the country move towards clean energy and self-reliance," said the Ministry.
