Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa Flees To Maldives In Military Jet

Amid widespread protests against the Rajapaksa family, Sri Lankan president Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled to Maldives, on July 13. The move comes after thousands of citizens overran his residence in the capital city of Colombo. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, being the president has immunity from being arrested. Hence, he fled using a military jet, before stepping down from the post, to avoid the chance of getting detained.

Sri Lankan Political Crisis: President Gotabaya Rajapaksa Flees Residence, Protestors Break Into House

In Sri Lanka's captial city of Colombo, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled his residence as protestors surrounded his house. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan police fired tear gas shells to control the mob. Reportedly, some protestors wielding Sri Lankan flags and helmets broke into Gotabaya Rajapaksa's residence. At least 21 people including two police officials were injured in the incident, reported Reuters.

Sri Lanka Violence Intensifies, 8 People Died In Clash

In Sri Lanka violence intensified after the government called for an emergency nationwide curfew and the resignation of PM Rajapaksa. In Negombo, violence broke out leading to the killing of eight people, in the past 24 hours. Furthermore, the protestors gathered on road in support of the Prime Minister. Meanwhile, approximately 216 people were injured and are being admitted in Colombo, the capital city.

Sri Lanka's Oldest Airport To Start Operating International Flights

Sri Lanka's oldest and first airport has opened for international flights, from March 27. The Ratmalana airport was set for domestic flights after the Bandaranaike International Airport (Katunayake) was commissioned in the '60s. IND VS SL: India Triumphs Series Win With Deepak Chahar's Unbeaten 69
