UK Witnesses 3 Times Surge In COVID-19 & Omicron Cases, Mulls Lockdown

The UK reported a massive surge in Omicron cases, taking the tally to 24,968.  In the past 24 hours, nation reported 10,048 cases, triple times surge, forcing the UK Government to take massive restriction steps. Considering the situation, the UK Government is planning to impose strict lockdown. Besides Omicron, the UK reported 90,418 COVID-19 cases, taking the total to 11,279,428 cases till date.

US Opens Borders For International Air Travelers

The United States Government on November 8, announced that the borders are open for international air travelers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported in a statement, that foreign travelers must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and will be required to show negative test results at the time of boarding. Reportedly, the country has ended its air travel ban for 33 countries including India, as per reports.

Active COVID-19 Cases In Country Lowest In 242 days: Health Ministry

Union Health Ministry on October 27, recorded 13,451 new Coronavirus cases in India, taking the total tally to 3,42,15,653. Furthermore, the active cases have been declined to 1,62,661, which is the lowest in 242 days. The daily rise in Coronavirus cases have been below the 30 thousand mark since March 2021. "Our  figures are being reconciled with the Indian council of medical Research," said the ministry on its website.

Tamil Nadu Govt Extends Lockdown By Another Week Till May 31

Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin on May 22 announced the extension of complete lockdown by one more week. Following the steep increase in the COVID-19 death rate, the government extended the lockdown ending on May 24. However, the new guideline will allow shops to open till 9 pm on May 23 to stock up essentials. Allowing banks, private offices, the new order mandated e-registration for inter-state medical travel.

HC Rejects PIL Seeking FIR Against Cops For Using Force In Lockdown

The Karnataka High Court on May 19 rejected a PIL seeking FIR and departmental enquiry against the state cops for assaulting general public while implementing the lockdown. The petitioner, mentioning media reports, equalled the brutality with that of faced by freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai. Dismissing the plea, HC disagreed with the comparison and said police 'may not be doing that out of any pleasure.

India's Electricity Demand Dips In 2020-21; First Time In 35 Years

A data analysis by Reuters has revealed that annual electricity usage in India has drastically fell for the first time in last 35 years. Citing pandemic-induced lockdown as a reason, the analysis showed that power generation dipped by 0.2% for the year 2020-21. However, it also highlighted that while March 2021 observed a continuous increase in electricity generation, it picked up by 23% in comparison to March 2020 demand.

College in Bali Allows Students To Pay Coconut in Lieu of Tuition Fees

One of the hospitality college in Bali, Indonesia has allowed financially struggling students to pay fees in the form of 'coconuts and other natural produce'. The Venus One Tourism Academy claimed, “We have to educate them to optimize the natural resources in their surroundings. So when the pandemic is over, they would be more than just a common workers".
