Govt Data Shows 348 Deaths, 1,189 Tortured In Police Custody

In response to MP Karti Chidambaram's query on police violence against the civilians, MoS for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai notified Lok Sabha on August 3. Reportedly, a total of 348 accused have died and 1,189 were tortured in police custody between 2018-2021, as per National Human Rights Commission's Data. Between 2020-2021, over 100 deaths and 236 people were tortured.

71% Of Custodial Deaths In India Are Poor and Marginalised: NHRC Data

National Human Rights Commission’s report revealed that out of the total custodial deaths during 1996-97 to 2017-18, around 71.58% of the deceased were either poor or came from marginalized section. The study was conducted by the New Delhi-based National Campaign Against Torture (NCAT) team. Certain communities such as the Chakma and Hajong community of Arunachal Pradesh, a descendent of East Pakistan, face serious discriminations.
