Dam Safety Bill 2019 Listed For Consideration, Passing In Rajya Sabha

The Dam Safety Bill 2019 was listed for consideration and passing in Rajya Sabha on November 29. The bill aims to provide operation, maintenance and safety of the dams to prevent dam failure. Notably, the bill was previously passed by Lok Sabha. Furthermore, issues like farm laws, price rise and Pegasus will be discussed on the first day of Winter Session of Parliament.

WB Villages Experience Flood-Like Situation Due To Heavy Rainfall

Villages of South Bengal are now submerged in water due to four days of continuous rainfall. With the DVC releasing water, people are in fear of a flood-like situation with a potential loss of property including the crops in farmlands. With the apprehension of high tide on June 26 and DVC continuing to release water, the state government is taking necessary measures to ensure that rivers do not overflow.

China Plans To Become The Largest Producer Of Hydro-Electricity

China is planning to build a huge dam in the Tibet area of Brahmaputra river producing thrice the hydro-electricity extracted from the Three Gorges. The set-up is expected to produce 300 billion kilowatts of electricity each year. Reportedly, this can potentially affect the water supply of the entire South Asia. However, the Tibetan people raised their concern as a huge section of their ecological location would get submerged.

Maharashtra: Mumbai-Nagpur Highway Sees Flooding As Dam Discharges Water

According to a senior official from the Irrigation Department, the Mumbai-Nagpur Highway section of Aurangabad district, Maharashtra, was flooded on September 23 due to a dam-discharged water. The official stated that the 'Bor Dahegaon irrigation project' has been filled to capacity almost after a decade. The Police arrived at the spot and diverted the traffic, requiring a roundabout detour of 15 km.
