Red Alert Issued In Kerala Amid Excessive Water Discharge From Dams

Amid Kerala rainfall and various dams continuing to discharge excess water, the concerned weather authority issues red alerts in Kerala. In Many dams of the state, water has been released due to excessive rainfall causing trouble to people in the region as the water level has breached the upper rule curve. Citing an example, the water level at Cheruthoni dam of Idukki reservoir is at 2,385.70 feet, amid drizzling forecast.

Maharashtra: Flooding Continues In Wardha Due To Heavy Rains; Orange Alert Issued In Gadchiroli, Gondia

Flooding continues to wreak havoc in parts of Maharashtra's Wardha district, as the region saw constant rains and overflowing dams, and rescue mission continues. Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai issued an orange alert in Gadchiroli and Gondia on July 18, anticipating thunderstorms and lightning with heavy rainfall. 102 people died due to rain and flooding from June 1 which impacted at least 28 districts.

Ageing Dams In India Is A Threat To Life & Environment, Says UN Report

In a report released by the UN revealed that India is under a major threat possessed by large dams ageing in the country. According to the reports, over 1,000 dams will turn 50 years old by 2025 and most people on earth will live downstream by 2050. However, the re-construction of water-dam is not going to be witnessed anytime soon in 20th century, says the reports compiled by Canada-based Institute for Water, Environment and Health.

IUCN Red List Marks All Freshwater Dolphins As 'Threatened'

In its updated ‘Red List’, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has marked all the five freshwater Dolphins species as ‘threatened with extinction.’ The IUCN has cited incidental mortality in fishing gear, river pollution and construction of dams as the reason.
