Ratan Lal, DU Professor, Detained In Connection With Gyanvapi Mosque Post, Given Bail

Delhi court issued bail to Delhi University professor Ratan Lal on May 21, who was detained on May 20 over a social media post purportedly designed to offend religious beliefs following the alleged discovery of 'Shivling' within the Gyanvapi Mosque complex in Varanasi. He was charged under Indian Penal Code Sections 153A and 295A. On May 21, Left-affiliated All India Students Association protested the arrest outside DU's Arts Faculty.

DU Professor Arrested Over FB Post Regarding Gyanvapi Mosque Row

Ratan Lal, an assistant professor at Delhi University (DU), was arrested on May 20, over his Facebook post regarding the ongoing Gyanvapi Mosque row. Lal was arrested on the grounds that his post "promoted enmity" between communal groups, and allegedly aimed at disturbing peace and harmony. Following his arrest, DU's left-wing student groups like AISA and SFI staged protest outside Maurice Nagar police station.
