Suicide Bomb Explosion Kills 6 In NE DR Congo: Christmas

In the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, a suicide bomber killed six people on December 25 at around 7 pm. The explosion took place in a bar in the city of Beni when the victims were celebrating Christmas. "Loss of life is reported. The security services are already deployed," tweeted Patrick Muyaya, a Congolese government spokesperson. The city mayor has urged the people to stay at home.

100 People Likely To Die After Wooden Vessel Sink In Congo River

The Democratic Republic of Congo's provincial authorities on October 9 said over 100 people are thought to have died or gone missing when their wooden vessel sank in the Congo River. Reportedly, 51 corpses have been discovered and ''another 69 are believed to be missing''. The cause of the incident is said to be ''overcrowding aggravated by bad weather'' that led to the sinking of the makeshift vessel.

Nobel Laureate Receives Death Threats, Gets Protection from UN Guards

On September 10, Nobel Peace Prize winner from DR Congo, Dr. Denis Mukwege got protection from UN guards after receiving death threats. According to sources, he was vocal about the political issues in Congo which led to the death threats. He was already guarded by UN until May and was left unguarded because of COVID-19. Mukwege won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018 for treating thousands of rape victims in Congo.
