5g To Roll Out In Selected Metro Cities Next Year

Telecom operators announced to establish 5g roll out in Indian metro cities on December 28. As per the release, 5g services will be launched in Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata, Gurugram, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Lucknow, Chennai, Ahmedabad and others, first.  Telecom providers like Airtel, Jio, Vodafone are said to be a part of the big project, worth Rs 224 crores. The project will be completed by December 31, 2021 for the trial launch.

Government To Impel For Hike In Floor Prices Of Telecom Company's Services

The government will probably impel for floor prices of telecom companies' services to secure sectoral viability. Other options such as the interest-free moratorium on spectrum payments and encashment of bank guarantees may also be considered. DoT officials claimed that informally the floor prices will work as a support mechanism. “The floor price could be hiked by up to Rs 30 per user,” the official stated.

India's Telecom Advertising Sector To See 11% Growth By 2023: Report

Media agency Zenith has extrapolated that India's telecom advertising market growth will experience 11% annual growth during 2020-2023. 5G Spectrum Auction: Reliance Jio Leads In Earnest Money Deposit

Reliance Jio has taken lead in earnest money deposit for the 5G spectrum auction scheduled from March 1. Investing Rs 10,000 crore EMD, Jio has been allocated the highest eligibility points (73,007) by the Telecom department. While Airtel deposited Rs 3,000 crore, Vodafone was allocated 6,153 points over its Rs 457 crore EMD. The 2,251.25 megahertz spectrum worth Rs 3.92 lakh crore auction will be in seven frequency bands.

DoT Mandates Prefixation of '0' For All Landline to Mobile Calls

As per a Department of Telecommunications's (DoT) release, landline users will have to prefix a zero for all calls directed to mobile phones from January 15. All major Indian telecom giants like Airtel and Jio have started notifying their customers about the new landline to mobile rule. Reportedly, the directive, which was issued in November 2020, has been implemented to secure adequate numbering resources for fixed-line and mobile users.

Jio Makes All Domestic Voice Calls Free From January 1

Reliance Jio has announced to offer free voice calls to any network in India starting January 1, 2021. Reportedly, telecom giant scrapped Interconnect Usage Charges (IUC) to make all domestic calls over other networks free. Jio said that it has shown its commitment to not charge for off-net voice call-charges as the IUC provisions have been abolished by the telecom regulator TRAI. Moreover, it stated it cares about its customers.

TRAI Appoints P D Vaghela as New Chairman

P.D. Vaghela, on September 28, has been appointed as the new TRAI chairman, succeeding RS Sharma who served for almost 5 years. Vaghela, an IAS officer from Gujarat, is currently serving as a secretary in the Department of Pharmaceuticals (DOP) under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers and was also the Commissioner of Commercial Tax in Gujarat during the 2017 GST implementation. Vaghela will be taking charge from October 1.
