J&K Govt Waives Off Electricity Bills, Bringing Relief To Households

As a relief to the consumers, the government of Jammu and Kashmir announced an amnesty scheme for domestic electricity consumers. According to the scheme, the bills which are not paid, will be waived off, including the penalty. The waiver also applies for commercial houses, institutions, factories and business unit. This has come despite the J&K government running in a revenue deficit.

Mamata Banerjee Inks Letter To PM Modi Over Electricity Bill

Voicing that states were not informed, Mamata Banerjee wrote to PM Modi protesting against introducing the Electricity Bill, 2020, in Parliament. "There has been some tokenism of consultations, but no real exchange of views, which is antithetical to the federal structure of our polity,” she wrote. Banerjee stated that the bill would "hamper the interests of common people" and urged him to “refrain from initiation of the legislation”.

MP Domestic Worker Receives Rs 2.5 Lakh As Electricity Bill

Rambai Prajapati, a domestic helper in MP's Guna district was dumbfounded when she was asked to pay her electricity bill for Rs 2.5 lakh. The 65-year-old lives in a hut with a table fan and a bulb. However, for the past seven days, she has been chasing the power department in order to rectify her bill. The officials, however, have refused to assist her.

India's Demand In Power Consumption Up By 19% For 1st Fortnight Of May

Recent Union power ministry data has showed a 19% spike in India's power consumption as compared to last year. The power consumption in first fortnight of May 2020 was 43.55 Billion Units which rose to 51.67 Billion Units in May 2021. Citing lockdown-led dip in power consumption in 2020, the ministry said that the significant recovery is due country's industrial and commercial demand for electricity picking up.
