Farm Bills

While showing her agitations against the farm bills, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has warned countrywide protests to support the farmers. Terming the bills as "anti-farmer bills", CM Mamata said that she was deeply concerned about the farmers. Moreover, She added, "The GOI is selling everything .... We must not allow treasures of our nation to be transformed into BJP party’s personal assets.” 

The meeting between farmers' representatives and the Union on the protests ended unresolved on December 1. However, another meeting has been slated for December 3. Punjab Government on October 20 moved a resolution in the special session of the state assembly, against the 'Farm Laws' by the Central Government. Following the resolution, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh said that he is "not afraid of resigning" and "will not let farmers suffer or be ruined." Congress President Sonia Gandhi has asked the Congress-ruled states to introduce legal frameworks that will help to overrule the farm bills. A Congress' statement suggested the states to legislate under Article 254(2) of the Constitution that allows states to pass a law which, once approved by the President, can nullify the effect of the Centre's law. Reportedly, Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh has initiated the process in this regard.
