Sweden Announces To 'Formally' Join NATO

Sweden's Social Democrat minority government said on May 16 that it will apply for NATO membership, following the path of Finland. Sweden's parliament passed NATO membership with a large majority. "The best thing for Sweden and the Swedish population is to join NATO," Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said during a discussion on security policy in parliament.

Finland Expected To Announce Bid To Join NATO; Sweden Likely To Follow

As Russia's invasion of Ukraine reshapes European security and the Atlantic military alliance, Finland is set to declare its decision to join NATO on May 12. Sweden is expected to follow suit. Russia claims that NATO expansion poses a direct danger to its national security. President Sauli Niinisto stated that if Finland provokes Russia by joining NATO, Putin would be held responsible.

Ukraine Defeats Finland 2-1 In World Cup Qualifier, Grabs 2nd Position

Ukraine defeated Finland 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier on October 9 owing to the goals from Andriy Yarmolenko and Roman Yaremchuk. Teemu Pukki of Norwich City evened up for Finland in the 29th minute, but Ukraine took back the lead minutes later. Ukraine has moved into the second position in Group D, eight points behind France, followed by 12 points. Finland leads Kazakhstan by five points.

Finland Employs Sniffer Dogs To Detect Coronavirus

Finland has deployed sniffer dogs at the Helsinki Airport on a four-month trial basis, to detect COVID-19. Reportedly, the travelers are asked to swipe their skin against a wipe, which is passed on to the sniffer dogs, who take ten seconds to detect the virus, presenting the results through signs such as scratching a paw, laying down, or barking. Passengers who test positive are directed to take the RT-PCR test for confirmation.
