Ghulam Nabi Azad

After resigning from Congress, a senior leader in Jammu & Kashmir, Ghulam Nabi Azad, floated his new party, the Democratic Azad party (DAP). On September 26, Azad said, "I am launching Democratic Azad Party (DAP) from here today. It symbolises democracy and freedom of speech and thought. Our ideology will be based on the ideals of Mahatama Gandhi." Notably, Ghulam Nabi Azad was with Congress for over five decades.

After the exit of Ghulam Nabi Azad from Congress, as many as 50 leaders in Jammu and Kashmir, announced resignation. The step came as a support to Azad, and include senior leaders like former Jammu and Kashmir deputy chief minister Tara Chand, Abdul Majid Wani, Manohar Lal Sharma, Gharu Ram and former MLA Balwan Singh. They submitted a joint resignation letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi, on August 30.

After Ghulam Nabi Azad, another Congress leader RS Chib also quit Congres's primary membership. On August 26, Chib said the Sonia Gandhi-led Congress lost its momentum in contributing to the future of Jammu & Kashmir. The resignation of Ghulam Nabi Azad came as a major setback in the J&K unit of Congress, as many leaders are likely to tender their resignation. The resignation is a major setback for Congress.

After facing defeat in five poll bound states, Congress G-23 leaders met Ghulam Nabi Azad at his residence. According to sources, few Congress leaders suggested to skip the meeting, as they were disappointed that nothing serious are discussed but only praises of Gandhi family, happens in such meetings.  Furthermore, Anand Sharma said, only G-23 leaders should attend the meeting and are likely to meet again in a few days.
