6 Dead, Numerous Missing In Glacier Collapse Due To High Temperatures In Italy

A glacial ice shelf broke in northern Italy on July 3 amid warmer-than-normal temperatures, leaving at least six people dead and more than a handful missing. Additionally, there were at least eight injuries, one of which was severe. Authorities warned that the area was at risk for more landslides. In order to find the missing, injured, and dead, rescuers used cutting-edge global positioning systems, hound dog teams, and helicopters.

Switzerland Green Activists Shed Light on the Melting of Trient Glacier

Over 200 eco-activists on September 6 gathered at Switzerland's Trient glacier to create awareness about melting of glaciers in the Alps region. The gathering happened a day prior to the Swiss Parliament's deliberation on curbing CO2 emissions. Activists expressed concerns over the rate at which glaciers were melting for the past 30-40 years. Italy’s Valley Evacuated Over Fears of Mont Blanc Glacier Collapse

Around 75 people have been evacuated from Italy’s Alpine valley amid fears that the Planpincieux glacier in the Mont Blanc range could collapse due to the summer heat. A local environmental expert has warned that the glacier is melting due to the global warming and could fall "at any time". It is currently under observation with aerial photography and radar; also, the roads leading to the area have been closed.
