Gold Smuggling

Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the customs department seized around 3.25 Kg gold from passengers on three separate occasions, all from Kochi airport, within 24 hours. The total seizure is estimated to be worth Rs 1.50 crore.  In the first instance, 1,257 grams of gold was seized from two passengers. In the second instance, around 200 grams of gold powder was seized. Lastly, 1,783.27 grams was seized from another passenger.

Mumbai Airport customs on September 11, seized 12 Kg gold worth Rs 5.38 crore in the airport. A Sudanese passenger reportedly smuggled the gold wearing a specially belt. Repeatedly, some passengers tried to facilitate his escape, but was overpowered. Furthermore, six persons have been detained in connection to the incident, and six others are being deported, as per a statement released by Customs.

Government Railways police seized 32kg of gold jewellery worth Rs 16 crores, from Mumbai-Bhubaneshwar Konark express on March 2. The GRP arrested 4 people, carrying the gold worth crores. The police officer added, they were suspicious of four men (Hasmukh Lal Jain, Suresh Sahadev Kharey, Mahesh Bhonsale and Deepak Patel) veiling the train and when checked their bags found gold without valid GST documents. Mangaluru Air Customs officials arrested a couple travelling inbound from Dubai in Air India on March 27 for smuggling gold worth Rs 39.48 lakh. The Customs authority at the Chennai airport on January 13 seized 1.42 kg of gold worth Rs 72.6 lakhs and other items including cigarettes, smartphones, laptops and liquor amounting to Rs 12.4 lakhs.
