Sri Lanka Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe Declares Emergency
Sri Lanka acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe declared an emergency in the country, amid the ongoing protests against the worst economic crisis. On July 18, the acting President and PM of Sri Lanka said, the emergency has been in effect in the interest of public security. The developments came after Gotabaya Rajapaksa submitted his resignation and flew to Singapore. Furthermore, the elections for new Sri Lanka President is on July 20.

Earlier, president Gotabaya Rajapaksa who was scheduled to resign on July 13, fled to Maldives, after his residence was overran by thousands of protestors. Following which, he is now expected to flee to Singapore. Meanwhile, protestors stormed at Wickremesinghe's office, and demanded for his resignation as well.

Amid widespread protests against the Rajapaksa family, Sri Lankan president Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled to Maldives, on July 13. The move comes after thousands of citizens overran his residence in the capital city of Colombo. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, being the president has immunity from being arrested. Hence, he fled using a military jet, before stepping down from the post, to avoid the chance of getting detained.

Rajapaksa Signs Resignation Papers, Public Announcement On July 13: Sri Lanka
After months of protest by Sri Lanka citizens, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa finally signed his resignation letter dated July 13. The papers were signed on July 11, and were given to a senior government official. Notably, the resignation letter will be handed over to the speaker of Parliament, who will make a public announcement. In Sri Lanka's captial city of Colombo, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled his residence as protestors surrounded his house. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan police fired tear gas shells to control the mob.
