21% Indians Exposed To COVID-19, Medicos Worst Affected: ICMR Survey

The ICMR’s third nationwide serological survey has revealed that over 21% of Indians have contracted COVID-19. Conducted from December 17-January 8, the survey indicated that nearly 80% of the population still remains susceptible to the coronavirus. Russian Scientist Claims Herd Immunity for COVID-19 Almost Impossible

Russian Scientist Alexander Chepurnov, who voluntarily contracted with COVID-19 for the sake of research claims COVID antibodies disappeared during his second infection. Chepurnov, who was re-infected after six months from the first infection, said, "My conclusion is that mankind will most likely be unable to obtain a herd immunity to the coronavirus." He further added that periodic vaccination is must to control the disease.

WHO Head Opposes Herd Immunity Approach to Fight Against COVID-19

World Health Organization head Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus has stated that herd immunity approach is “ethically and scientifically problematic.” The approach calls for spreading of the virus to achieve herd immunity. Dr Ghebreyesus said that the approach has never been followed as a strategy in history and it would cause “unnecessary suffering”. “Herd immunity is achieved by protecting people from a virus, not by exposing them to it,” he said.

Health Minister Says India to Take Very Much Time to Reach Herd Immunity

India will still take very much time to achieve herd immunity, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan asserted on September 27. Citing the second serological survey conducted by ICMR, he emphasised the need of following COVID-19 norms. He also said that a research was being conducted to determine the effects of coronavirus on body parts apart from lungs. He further informed that ICMR is studying re-infection cases as well.

21.5% People Exposed to Coronavirus, Says Chennai's Serological Survey

Atleast 21.5% of the people tested in Chennai has developed immunity against coronavirus, a serological survey conducted by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) suggested. GCC Commissioner informed that, for the survey, over 12,000 samples were collected randomly in July. He also added that the COVID-19 positivity rate has decreased from 30% to 9% in the city. A serological survey provides insight on the extent of the virus' spread.
