Coal Imports In India Drops By 2.7% In August; 15.22 MT In 2021

India experienced a decline in its coal imports to 15.22 million tonnes (MT) from 15.64 MT, which is 2.7% less in August 2021. Besides, the total coal imports this year, non-coking coal was 9.08 MT against 10.33 MT last year. Approximately 6.71% of coal imports have decreased through major and non-major ports. Moreover, the crisis was caused due to the closure of some mines and monsoons, says Coal Minister.

Exports In India Increases By 45.76% In August, Says Report

The new export-import data released by the commerce ministry on September 14 showed that exports increased by 45.76% from USD 22.83 to 33.28 billion in August. The cumulative figure of exports between April-August 2021 also expanded by 67.33% from the previous year's USD 98.06 billion to USD 164.10 billion. However, imports rose by 51.72% to USD 47.09 billion in August, resulting in a trade deficit of USD 13.81 billion.

Taliban Stops Trade Between India & Afghanistan

The trading relation with India has been stopped by Afghanistan after the capture of Kabul by the Taliban on August 15, where they also seized two important terminals. Dr Ajay Sahai, the director-general of the Federation of Indian Export Organisation asserted that this year the exports were worth $835 million while imports were $510 million. Afghanistan is popular for exporting sugar, tea, and others.

India’s Arms Import Dipped By 33%; Russia Worst Sufferer: SIPRI

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute has reported a 33% decline in India's import of arms between 2011–15 and 2016–20. It cited India's complex procurement processes and the country's efforts to reduce dependence on imported arms and boost defense manufacturing at home as the reasons. Notably, the report said that Russia was the worst sufferer of the decline followed by the US from where India's arms import dipped by 46%.

Govt Likely Increase Import Duties On Certain Products

As a measure to encourage local production, the Union government has been planning to raise the import duties on goods such as electronics, edible oil, leather and textile products. One of the officials claimed that the hike would be announced in the upcoming budget with prior notification. Reportedly, the government had raised the import taxes of vegetable oil and electronics by 34% and 12.25% respectively.

1,450 Metric Ton of 'Hilsa’ Shipment to Reach West Bengal Ahead of Durga Puja

A consignment of 1,450 metric tonnes Bangladeshi Hilsa fish will reach the West Bengal market before Durga Puja. Reportedly, the biggest since 2012, this shipment will lower the prices of the Bangla Hilsa in the local markets from Rs 1500-1800 per kilogram to Rs 800-1200. Earlier, Bangladesh government had banned Hilsa exports in 2012. BSF has also seized around 2,800 Kg smuggled Bangladeshi Hilsa in the last seven months.
