Indian Hockey Team

Legendary hockey player and former Indian captain Charanjit Singh, who represented India as captain in 1964 Tokyo Olympics gold medal-winning team, died on January 27 in Himachal Pradesh, after suffering a cardiac arrest, that followed prolonged illnesses. He was 90 years old, and was paralysed after suffering a stroke five years back. Singh is survived by two sons and one daughter. Reportedly, his last rites are yet to be performed.

The Indian Hockey team lost to Belgium's Hockey team (5-2) in the first semifinal of Tokyo Olympics 2020. Team India was in the lead during the early stages of the match. Back to back penalty corners put India in the backfoot. Despite the loss, the dream of winning a medal is not far gone. Team India's match on August 5 will be the last chance to secure a bronze medal.

Former Indian Hockey player and coach MK Kaushik was hospitalised on April 24 after detecting chest infections in a CT scan. While Kaushik’s oxygen level is currently fluctuating his wife is also admitted and is recovering steadily. Training both senior men’s and women’s team, it was Kaushik only under whose coaching Men’s and women’s hockey team won the 1998 Asian Games and 2006 Doha Asian Games respectively.

Finishing fourth in the recently declared world rankings, the Indian men's hockey team has achieved its highest position in the rankings since 2003. However, the feat was achieved as the team played fewer matches compared to earlier years due to the pandemic.
