Ex-JNU Student, Activist Umar Khalid Tests COVID Positive In Tihar Jail
Former JNU student and activist, Umar Khalid, who was arrested for his involvement in the 2020 Delhi riots case, has tested positive for COVID-19 in Delhi’s Tihar Jail. Reportedly, the 33-year-old activist has been isolated in the jail following the symptoms. As of April 23, the prison has recorded 227 active COVID-19 cases, including inmates and staff, in the premises. Currently, there are about 20,000 inmates in Tihar Jail.

Jail Authorities Raise Concerns Of COVID-19 Outbreak As Prisoners Return
The Delhi High Court's order cancelling extension of interim bails and stays has made jail authorities concerned over COVID-19 outbreak in prisons. The court has asked the undertrials to surrender between November 2-13 in phased-manner. The authorities believe, after return of 2,200 inmates, overstressed jails will be more prone to COVID-19.
