Specially Abled Muslim PhD Student Assaulted By ABVP Members At JNU Campus

A PhD student at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Farooque Alam, was allegedly assaulted by members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on the campus on September 7. According to a post shared by the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) on X, Alam was attacked by some ABVP members who had visited Kaveri Hostel on the campus. He was reportedly subjected to torture, dragged, and physically assaulted by ABVP members.

Students & Security Staff Clash In JNU; 2 FIRs Filed

In Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), a clash broke out between a group of students and the security personnel. The incident reportedly occurred at around 10:30 am, and the students were protesting for their “rights”. Reportedly, around 15 students barged into the Students and projects section, and confined some of the teachers to the chairs. Further details on the matter are awaited.

JNU To Issue Admissions For PG & Diploma Programmes Through CUET

The Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi has announced to issue admissions to Postgraduate courses and advanced Diplomas of proficiency programmes through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET). The announcement has come after UGC decided to introduce the CUET for Postgraduate courses. The application process has begun on May 20, and will conclude on June 18. Reportedly, the exam is scheduled in the third week of July.

Education Ministry Demands Report In JNU Student Clash

The JNU administration has been asked to submit a detailed report on the clash, which left six students injured. On hearing the incident that took place on the day of Ram Navami, Union Education Minister on April 12s asked for details. Notably, an FIR has been registered with Delhi police, demanding action against the ABVP activists, who allegedly attacked the students for serving non-veg food in the mess.

Umar Khalid's Bail Plea Deferred Once Again: Delhi Riots

Delhi court hearing the bail plea of JNU student leader Umar Khalid in the Delhi violence case, deferred pronouncement of the order till March 23. Special Public Prosecutor Amid Prasad stated that adequate evidence is available against Khalid, including his chats. Umar Khalid was arrested on September 13, 2020 as a primary suspect in the northeast Delhi riots case which took the lives of 53 people and left hundreds injured.

PhD Student Molested Inside JNU Delhi Campus

A female PhD student was allegedly molested in Jawaharlal Nehru University, police confirmed on January 18. They said that a call regarding the molestation incident inside the campus was received, following which Police officers rushed to the spot. "The accused on bike, tried to molest the student, but had fled from the spot, after she raised alarm". Meanwhile, a case has been registered, while accused is being nabbed.

JNU Resumes For Third-Year Ph.D. Students; COVID Certificate Mandatory

The JNU classes have been resumed for third-year Ph.D. students from September 23, while the final-year students of MSc and MBA or final-year Btech students will resume their offline classes from September 27. However, the students will have to present a negative COVID RT-PCR certificate within 72 hours. Besides, the entry of busses in the campus will be permitted following the COVID protocols.

JNU's New Course On Counter-Terrorism Initiates Controversy 

JNU's new course has sparked controversy following the university's Academic Council which approved a new course based on "counter-terrorism." Besides, the course is available for dual-degree engineering students as a part of International Relations. The optional course claims ''Jihadi terrorism'' is supported by countries with communist backgrounds. However, the course will only be offered following the Executive Council's approval.
