Supreme Court Announces Verdict In Delhi Mayor Polls Controversy

In a major setback for the Delhi Government, the Supreme Court (SC) restricted nominated members to vote for Mayor and Deputy Mayor elections in Delhi. On February 17, the Apex Court gave the judgement, ending the controversy over the voting for the Delhi Mayor's election. Reviewing the petition, the court also said the election of Mayor need to precede the Deputy Mayor election, notified 24 hours prior.

Odisha Court Convicts 8 People For Killing Sarpanch Head

An Odisha's Kendrapara district court sentenced eight people to life imprisonment for murdering a panchayat head. Reviewing a case, judge Gopal Chandra Behera convicted the assailants and slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 each for brutally killing Chitrasen Das. The judgement was based on a cross-examination of 39 witnesses. Notably, the accused allegedly killed Das six years ago over an old enmity.

Opposition Terms Supreme Court's PMLA Upholding Verdict As "Dangerous"

Reacting to the Supreme Court verdict on the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, and power given to the E, 15 opposition parties have termed it as 'dangerous.' The opposition leaders issued a "joint statement" saying, "giving more powers to agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate is dangerous. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh shared the joint statement by 17 opposition parties against the Top Court's judgement on Twitter.

Karnataka HC Reserve Orders In Xiaomi-ED Case

The Xiaomi-Enforcement Directorate case was reviewed by the Karnataka High Court (HC) single-bench judge SG Pandit, and has reserved its judgment, on June 16. Notably, the Chinese firm Xiaomi filed a case against ED, after the agency seized Rs 5,551.27 crore from its bank accounts. The mobile company is facing violation charges of the provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act, not allowing the seized money to use for business.

Illegitimate Child Has Right On Family Property, Says SC

The Supreme Court set aside a judgement of the Kerala High Court, allowing child born of wedlock, to have right on family property. On June 15, the apex court, reviewed a petition filed by a Kerala person, challenging the HC order stating the illegitimate child has no right on property. The SC judge said, a relation of couple living together for long is as pure as marriage and announced verdict.

It's Women's Choice To Work Despite Education Qualifications, Says Bombay HC Judge

Education qualification shouldn't be the only reason, forcing a woman to earn living. On June 11, the Bombay HC judge Bharti Dangre stated this while reviewing a man’s plea challenging the lower-family court's orders,  which asked him to pay Rs 5,000 maintenance to his estranged wife in a Domestic Violence pending case. Dismissing the man's plea, Justice Dangre said, " It is a woman's choice to work."

SC Orders To Stop Filing FIRs For Sedition Charges

To restrict misuse of the Sedition Law, the Supreme Court gave a historic judgment, asking to pause filing FIRs under the 124A section, until the Centre completes its review. On May 11, the SC bench said, "It will be appropriate not to use this provision of law till further re-examination is over." Furthermore, the Apex Court said, those facing sedition charges can approach the court for the same.

Ex-Cop Param Bir Singh Reaches Mumbai; Says, 'Will Join The Probe'

Param Bir Singh, a former Mumbai police commissioner who has been declared a proclaimed offender by Mumbai High Court, arrived on November 25. Earlier, the IPS officer who is facing extortion charges in Maharashtra told news stations that he was in Chandigarh. Upon arrival, Singh told the reporters that he would join the probe as ordered by the High Court.
