National Lok Adalat Scheduled For November 12
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution announced that National Lok Adalat will be held on November 12 across the country. The Lok Adalat system will help disposing pending cases through mutual settlement between parties. The consumer commissions have been directed to make a list of cases which can possibly be settled. This list of pending cases will then be transferred to Lok Adalat.

Assam Govt Announces To Withdraw Over 1,00,000 Minor Cases To Ease Burden On Judiciary
The Assam government has announced to withdraw over 1,00,000 minor cases to reduce the burden on lower judiciary. The minor cases also those of criminal nature, and those filed over social media posts. Reportedly, around 4,50,000 cases are pending before the minor courts in Assam. This is done so that the judiciary can focus on bigger issues like rape, murder, etc.

India Needs Judiciary 'That Can Deliver Easy & Speedy Justice', Says PM Modi
PM Modi addressed the inauguration of the 11th joint conference of Chief Ministers and Chief Justices, on April 30. During his speech, he said that upon India's completion of 100 years of Independence in 2047, the Judiciary of the country must be capable of fulfilling the growing aspirations of the country. He said that India needs a Judicial system "that can deliver easy justice, speedy justice and justice for all".

CJI NV Ramana Calls For 50% Reservation For Women In Judiciary
NV Ramana, Chief Justice of India on September 26, called for a 50% reservation for women in the judiciary and wished to have the same in law colleges. "We need 50% reservation for women in judiciary. It is an issue of thousands of years of oppression," he said. Records show that less than 30% of women constitute the lower judiciary while it is 11% for higher levels.

Maharashtra Best, UP Worst In Delivering Justice: India Justice Report
The India Justice Report 2020 has ranked Maharashtra as the best Indian state in delivering justice with a 5.77/10 score. Conducted in 18 states, the report revealed that 69% prisoners still await investigation and trial. Union Law Minister Says More Than 2 Lakh Cases Pending In Andhra High Court
About 2,03,024 cases are pending in the Andhra Pradesh High Court and 5,82,069 cases are pending in other lower courts in the state, as of September 17. Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad provided the data in Rajya Sabha. While answering a question regarding the impact of COVID-19 on the judiciary, he stated that 15,32,334 cases had been disposed by the district and subordinate courts across the country since March 24.

Prashant Bhushan Guilty of Contempt for Tweets Against CJI, Judiciary
Advocate and activist Prashant Bhushan has been held guilty of contempt on August 14 for his tweets against the Chief Justice of India SA Bobde and the Supreme Court. A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Justice Arun Mishra, rejected Bhushan's explanation that he was exercising his freedom of speech.The Supreme Court will announce the quantum of punishment on August 20.
