The BCCI officially announced wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson to be a replacement of KL Rahul in the T20 Internationals, in West Indies series. On July 29, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announced, "KL Rahul was earlier named in the squad and his participation in the T20I series was subject to fitness. The batter tested positive for COVID-19 last week and has been advised rest by the BCCI medical team."

Indian skipper KL Rahul tested positive for Covid-19, on July 22. With this development, Rahul is likely to miss the India-West Indies T20 International series, starting from July 29. After Virat Kohli's resignation, KL Rahul's name popped up for Test Captaincy. However, former Indian Cricket Dilip Vengsarkar said, "It may be a practical idea to have a stop gap arrangement with Rohit Sharma, or even Ravichandran Ashwin for a year and so and groom someone else meanwhile."
