TMC Organises Martyr Rally, Deploys High Level Security In Esplanade
In view of the TMC Martyr Rally, celebrated on July 21, the Mamata Banerjee-led party organised a rally. A tight security arrangement has been in place for in the Esplanade area of Kolkata. A total of 4,500 police personnel will be deployed across the city. Additional CCTVs have been installed for security reasons. TMC observes Martyrs' Day to commemorate the killing of 13 people in 1993.

New Eel Species Ariosoma Bengalense Discovered By ZSI Scientists
A new species of eel has been discovered in West Bengal's Purba Medinipur district by scientists of Zoological Survey of India (ZSI). The new species has been named Ariosoma Bengalense, with resemblance to the place of its discovery. The eel was collected from Petuaghat fishing Harbour. Reportedly, the new species of eel, unlike other species, has larger eyes and is brown in colour.

PM Narendra Modi Inaugurates Deoghar Airport, Launches Maiden Flight From Deoghar To Kolkata
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 657-acre, Rs 401 crore Deoghar airport. He also signaled the departure of first IndiGo flight from Deoghar to Kolkata from the new airport. In next few days, the airport will be connected to Ranchi, Patna, and Delhi. IndiGo announced on July 12 that there will be four weekly flights connecting Deoghar and Kolkata. SpiceJet Cargo Flight Bound For China Returns To Kolkata After Weather Radar Failed
The weather radar on one of SpiceJet's flights to China malfunctioned on July 5, causing yet another technical issue. A Boeing 737 freighter (cargo plane) operated by SpiceJet was supposed to fly from Kolkata to Chongqing on July 5. The pilot in control chose to land back in Kolkata after takeoff when the weather radar stopped functioning. A SpiceJet spokesperson confirmed that the flight landed safely in Kolkata.

Man Sneaks Into CM Mamata Banerjee's Residence, Breaches Z-Category Security: West Bengal
A man whose identity and age is not disclosed, sneaked into West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee's residence, on July 2. Reportedly, he breached the Z-Category security cover and spent the night sitting in a corner, until he was spotted in the morning by security personnel. The police have taken high cognizance of the matter and has arrested the accused. The man was reportedly unarmed and further details are awaited.

Tapan Kandu Murder Case: CBI Files Chargesheet Against 5 Accused
In the case related to the alleged murder of councillor of Jhalda municipality Tapan Kandu in Kolkata, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed chargesheet against five accused before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, Purulia. The accused include Dipak Kandu, Kalebar Singh, Naren Kandi, Md Asik and Satyaban Pramanik. Tapan Kandu was killed when three assailants on a motorcycle fired three bullets at him.

Nupur Sharma Summoned By Kolkata Police Over Controversial Remarks On Prophet Mohammad
Suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma has been summoned by Kolkata police over her controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad in a TV debate. Sharma has been asked to appear at Narkeldanga police station on June 20. Also, TMC minority cell general secretary Abul Sohail filed an FIR against Sharma at Contai police station. 'Bandhan Express' Train Services Between India & Bangladesh Restarts After Two-Years
The passenger train operations between India and Bangladesh restarted on May 29 after a two-year break due to the pandemic, with the flagging off of the Bandhan Express from Kolkata station on its route to Khulna in Bangladesh. The Bandhan Express will travel twice a week between Kolkata and Khulna. On May 29, the Maitree Express will also commence operations between Kolkata and Dhaka.

Kolkata Model Cum Actress Dies Of Suicide Amid Depression
Depressed over less work, another model cum actress Manjushree Niyogi died of suicide in Kolkata, on night of May 26. The family of the deceased said, "she didn’t have much work in hand and also after her friend Bidisha died she said that she will also commit suicide and yesterday she did what she said by hanging herself." Notably, this is Niyogi's second suicide attempt in the past one-year.
