Gujarat Eyes 'Love Jihad' Law, Bids 5 Year Jail For Religious Conversions
The Gujarat government is all set to amend the Gujarat Freedom of Religion Act, 2003 to impose stricter consequences against forced religious conversions through marriage. Reportedly, the amendment bill proposed in the state assembly on March 29 comes with a five-year jail term and Rs 2-lakh penalty on the forced religious conversion of women. MP Assembly Passes Freedom Of Religion Bill 2021 By Voice Vote
Madhya Pradesh state assembly on March 8 passed 'Freedom of Religion Bill 2021' through voice vote. Aimed at providing freedom of religion, the bill prohibits religious conversions by force or any kind of spurious means. Moreover, a few provisions in the law allow imprisoning of the offender for up to ten years. Interestingly, the move came after Uttar Pradesh and Haryana passed anti-conversion laws, touted as 'love jihad.’

Muzaffarnagar Police Exonerates Brothers Charged Against Love Jihad
Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar police have withdrawn charges against two brothers - Nadeem and Salman - who were previously charged under contentious 'Love Jihad' law. The brothers were accused of unlawfully forcing a woman to change her religion, following which an FIR was filed against them in Mansurpur police station. However, SHO Dharmendra Pal has informed the police have given the duo a clean chit due to the absence of evidence.

Supreme Court To Hear Petitions Questioning Love Jihad Laws
The Supreme Court agreed to hear pleas questioning the constitutional validity of the 'Love Jihad' laws on January 6. The apex court stated that it would hear pleas and arrive at a resolution rather than staying the implementation of the laws at present. Reportedly, the plea was filed by advocate Vishal Thakre, an NGO Citizen for Justice and Peace, and others. Earlier, the laws were passed in three states including Uttar Pradesh.

Madhya Pradesh Passes Love Jihad Bill 2020; Rs 50,000 penalty For Violators
Madhya Pradesh becomes the third state among the Indian states to pass the 'Freedom Of Religion Bill 2020' in-order to prevent the forceful religious conversions. "The forceful conversion will attract 1-5 yrs of imprisonment and a minimum Rs 25,000 fine," said MP Home Minister Narottam Mishra. Also, incase of a minor or woman or someone from Scheduled Tribe will lead to 2-10 years imprisonment and minimum penalty of up to Rs 50,000.
