Madras HC Hears Plea, Says To Be Tolerant Towards Other Religion
The Madras HC, on February 6, reviewed a petition filed against construction of a church, granted by the district authority. Upholding the permission, the HC said, India is a secular country of diversities and takes pride in it. Single bench judge CV Karthikeyan said, "One of the basic tenets to be followed by every Hindu is tolerance." "The petitioner should learn to live with everybody else around him," said HC.

Restore Lok Sabha Seats Or Grant Monetary Compensation: Madras HC
Madras HC passed an order on August 17 to either restore the Lok Sabha representation of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh or look for monetary compensation. Since Tamil Nadu successfully implemented its population control in 1962, both the states have been facing "unfair representation" in the Parliament. Tamil Nadu To Become 1st State To Ban LGBTQ+ Conversion Therapy
Tamil Nadu is set to become the first state to ban "any attempts to medically cure or change the sexual orientation" of transgenders. Issuing guidelines in this regard, the Madras High Court on June 7 observed that it was transgenders' constitutional right to decide on their sexual orientation. The court also directed all the government departments to ensure that the LGBTQIA+ community is "not pushed out of the mainstream".

Stop Complaining On Media Reports Covering Court Proceedings: SC To EC
The Supreme Court on May 6 lashed out at the Election Commission asking to stop complaining on media reports. The courts response came after the commission complained about media reports on Madras HC's oral observations of booking EC for murder charges for failing to control election rallies. The SC said, the Constitution gives the freedom to speech and expression to media and it will not be restricted from covering court proceedings.

SC Terms Madras HC's Observation On EC 'Harsh And Inappropriate'
The Supreme Court on May 6 termed the Madras High Court's oral observations on the Election Commission as harsh and inappropriate. The apex court said that judges of superior courts should exercise restraint and avoid ‘off the cuff’ remarks during proceedings. Earlier on April 26, the Madras HC alleging the EC of being solely responsible for the second wave of COVID-19, warned to frame EC officials with murder charges.

EC Challenges Madras HC's "Murder Charges" Remarks In Supreme Court
The Election Commission on May 1 challenged the Madras High Court's "murder charges" remarks in the Supreme Court. The EC in its petition has said that the remarks were "uncalled for, blatantly disparaging and derogatory". Earlier, the high court had said that the EC "should be put up on murder charges" for mishandling the polling during the pandemic. The matter will now be heard on May 3.

Madras HC Bans Celebration Over Election Results Due To Pandemic
Concerning the pandemic situation across the country, the Madras HC has requested political parties in Tamil Nadu to stay away from victory celebrations. Asking the leaders to set an example, the court said, “There can be no celebrations, bursting of crackers and rallies till the present grim situation of pandemic eases.” Notably, the results for the single-phase assembly election held on April 6 will be declared on May 2.

Madras HC Judge To Undergo Counselling To Realise Same Sex Couples
Madras High Court Judge, Justice N Anand Venkatesh said on April 27 that he is not completely 'woke' enough on same-sex relationships. Reportedly, the justice will take educational sessions to understand same-sex relationships and then deliver a judgment in the court. Concerning a case of eloped lesbian couple petitioners, he said ‘the words must come from my heart and not from my head.’ He even approached a psychologist for help.

Madras HC Blames EC For 2nd COVID Wave; Says Will Stop Counting Of Votes
The Madras High Court lambasted the Election Commission on April 26 saying EC is singularly responsible for the second wave of COVID-19 and probably should be booked under murder charges. The HC also warned on cancelling the counting of votes on May 2, if EC fails to submit the blueprint of implementing COVID-19 norms.
