Magnus Carlsen

Chess champion Magnus Carlsen, who became news headlines for his behaviour of leaving a virtual match in between, has now accused his contender Hans Niemann of cheating. Viswanathan Anand won third place in the Norway Chess tournament on June 11. The Indian Grandmaster defeated Norway's Aryan Tari in the ninth and final round of the Classical section. Anand won the Armageddon round after the classical match ended in a 22-move draw. Anand finished the event in third place, behind Magnus Carlsen and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, with 14.5 points. 

In a one-day blitz event prior to the 10th edition of the Norway Chess Championship, Viswanathan Anand beat world No.1, Magnus Carlsen. Anand, however, lost in the fourth and ninth rounds to Anish Giri (Netherlands) and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (France) to end with 5 points in the 10-player blitz tournament on May 31. The Indian GM won the blitz against Aryan Tari of Norway before tying with So in round two.  

Norway's Magnus Carlsen and Phillipine's Wesley So shared the St. Louis Rapid and Blitz title on September 20 after scoring a tie of 24 points. Both Grandmasters received a cash prize of $45,000 each. The World champion ranked first in the Blitz category while So stood first in the rapid category.
