Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa To Be Sued; Sri Lankan Court Allows Proceedings

Sri Lanka’s top court has giving permission for proceedings against former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. This has come after rights group Transparency International filed a case against Rajapaksa, holding him accountable for the island nation’s worst financial crisis in more than seven decades. The court has also agreed to entertain proceedings against former PM Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The move comes after thousands of citizens overran his residence in the capital city of Colombo. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, being the president has immunity from being arrested. Hence, he fled using a military jet, before stepping down from the post, to avoid the chance of getting detained.

In Sri Lanka's captial city of Colombo, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled his residence as protestors surrounded his house. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan police fired tear gas shells to control the mob. Reportedly, some protestors wielding Sri Lankan flags and helmets broke into Gotabaya Rajapaksa's residence. At least 21 people including two police officials were injured in the incident, reported Reuters.

Doctors in Sri Lanka fear that soon a medical shortage could be caused as the foreign currency reserves are running out. Reportedly, hospitals are already postponing life-saving procedures for patients, since they do not have the necessary drugs. Sri Lanka imports 80% of its medicines, and the country's healthcare system is close to collapse. "If patients are in a queue for drugs, they will lose their lives," said Dr Ratnasingam.
